Appalachian Signal
Podcast
Role: Brand Designer
Project Type: Branding
Project Date: 2026
The Appalachian Signal is a podcast and emerging media platform rooted in Appalachian identity but national in scope — exploring politics, culture, and current events through in-depth conversations with a wide range of guests. The brand was built around a mission of bringing knowledge back: amplifying voices and perspectives that help people better understand the world around them. Drawing inspiration from railroad signal systems — structures designed to carry information, connect communities, and guide movement forward — the visual identity reflects clarity, direction, and shared understanding. Appalachia is the foundation and the point of view, but the signal reaches far beyond it.
The Challenge
Designing for something that doesn't fully exist yet requires a different kind of thinking. The Appalachian Signal was a brand new podcast with no archive of content, no established audience, and no defined roster of topics — just a vision and a point of view. The identity needed to feel complete and confident before a single episode had aired. The client also came in with a specific direction: railroad tracks as a visual anchor. The challenge was making that work without it feeling literal or heavy-handed.
The Approach
The railroad imagery was leaned into directly — using an actual train as a central visual element — while hand-drawn elements were woven throughout to ground the brand in something distinctly Appalachian. That handmade quality brings warmth and authenticity to what could have otherwise felt too polished or generic. Paired with strong typography and a deliberate color palette, the hand-drawn and illustrated details give the brand a sense of place and personality — an identity built to feel like it belongs to the region, while carrying a signal far beyond it.
